I hadn’t originally planned on making a stop in Malaysia, but once I realized that it was only a short and cheap flight away from Singapore, I decided to go for a few days. There were a few attractions in the capital city, Kuala Lumpur, that I was curious to explore and this provided a chance to see another country and culture in this region.
The Best Thing I Saw in Kuala Lumpur
Batu Caves
Just north of the city was Batu Caves, a limestone hill made up of three major caves. It was one of the most visited attractions in Kuala Lumpur and was a good way to spend an afternoon. The giant Lord Murugan statue at the base was the third tallest statue of a Hindu deity in the world and made for some nice photos. The colorful 272 steps also distinguished this site and made it easy to see why so many tourists made the journey to visit.
There were also monkeys on the steps and warnings about them stealing food, drinks, and possessions. I made sure to protect my emergency sugar supply because I wasn’t going to let a monkey ruin my time here.
Inside the caves was a chance to take part in some Hindu rituals and watch ceremonies the workers performed daily. It was also a chance to marvel in the limestone walls and the open-air ceiling above.
The view from the top wasn’t bad either.
Other Highlights
Petronas Twin Towers
Once the two tallest buildings in the world, they no longer hold that claim but still would be the two tallest in Malaysia and certainly the most recognizable in Kuala Lumpur.
There were a few nice looking fountains just around the base of the towers and some eye-catching water and light shows that dazzled the crowds each night.
KL Tower
I never went up the KL Tower or went close enough for a better picture than this one, but I did enjoy a few nice dinners with a friend in Kuala Lumpur that had some nice views of the city.
On my last day in Kuala Lumpur, I walked around the city and spent time in the shopping district, which was where I found a nice upscale barber shop and had a full haircut and shave. Figuring out where to get a haircut in countries where English was not the first language would sometimes be a challenge and I had some interesting barber experiences along my travels, but this one in KL was one of the best.

The good news was I didn’t have any real diabetes related issues in my few days in Malaysia. I ate a lot of Thai food and sushi, but was able to balance well with my Humalog boluses. I stayed in one location and was able to leave my insulin in the refrigerator at the condo, something that would be a bit different the following week in Western Australia.
After about two months in Southeast Asia, I was ready to move on to a new continent.
Keep the sugar levels steady.
